What are chalk couture stencils made of

Chalk Couture stencils are made of high-quality adhesive vinyl that is silkscreened. The vinyl transfers are reusable and washable, making them perfect for use on various surfaces. Chalk Couture stencils can be used several times if you take care of them. This means you use them properly and clean them when you are finished with your project.

How to Use Chalk Couture Transfers

If you are new to Chalk Coutures, then you may need to know exactly HOW to use chalk couture stencils and chalk paste. It's really quite simple and doesn't take a lot of time to complete a project. Read this step-by-step guide to completing a chalk project which tells you how to use your chalk transfers.

How to Clean chalk couture stencils

One of the first questions I had, when I was first introduced to Chalk Couture, was how to clean my chalk couture transfers or stencils. If it was reusable, what was the best way to clean it so I could use it numerous times? Since this topic really requires lots of details, I've got a whole post JUST on cleaning your stencils!

Cleaning your transfers right after you use them is the best way to make sure your stencils can be used over and over. You should be able to get 10 or so uses from your stencil if you take care of it.

The biggest thing to remember is to not let your stencils soak in water. The adhesive will begin to break down and your transfer will not get as many uses.

How to make chalk couture stencils

Another question I hear a lot from crafters is “Can I DIY Chalk Couture stencils”? You probably could, but why? Isn't the purpose of having a quick and easy piece of home decor you can display proudly to have it completed before the season gets here?

I think of it this way: if you want to make an omelet, Are you going to go get some chickens to raise so you can have some eggs? Are you going to buy a cow and make your own cheese? Are you going to grow your own garden so you can have some peppers?

If you are, that's great! But do you see how much additional time this takes to make chalk stencils yourself?

Now, sure I see if you have a specific design in mind that you want; that would be a good reason to make your own. Instead, did you know that Chalk Couture will accept design ideas? So, pass along your idea to your Designer to submit. I've submitted several design ideas that have been made into chalk couture transfers!

Chalk Couture Transfer Sizes

Chalk Couture stencils come in 5 different sizes.

  • A size transfers are 5×7 inches.

  • C size transfers are 12 x 18 inches

  • E size transfers are 18 x 24 inches

Some of the larger size transfers, like size C, D, and E may come with several different designs that are cut apart and used separately.

I find the smaller sizes are the most popular. For example, the most popular boards are the board and base as well as the 9×12 frames like the Aiden and Sylvie. The size A and size B transfers fit on these boards. If you aren't sure about which board to get, be sure to check out this helpful guide on choosing a Chalk Couture board.

If you are a Club Couture member (Yes, Chalk Couture has a monthly transfer club you can join!) then you will want several 9×12 frames because sometimes you just can't bring yourself to erase that design you created last month. This transfer size also makes great gifts!

Tips for using Larger Transfers

  • Larger transfers – sizes C and larger – can be difficult to handle when using. Cutting the transfer apart helps to make it more manageable. Just be sure not to cut into the screen area.
  • Fuzzing transfers can be a challenge as well. Turning the transfer over (sticky side up) and peeling the backer carefully will allow you to place the fuzzing cloth on top of the transfer to fuzz it. Remember to place it, peel it, lift it and replace it to fuzz several times. You may need to hold the edge with your fingers.
  • Storing larger-size transfers can also be a challenge. Be sure to check out all the storage tips here.
